The Problem
A homeowner in Horsell discovered a crack in their bathroom basin — a hairline crack had appeared in the bottom of the ceramic basin and was weeping water slowly into the vanity unit below. The basin was part of a vanity unit and the homeowner wanted it replaced before the vanity unit was damaged.
The basin was a semi-recessed ceramic basin fitted into a vanity worktop, approximately 8 years old. The crack was in the bottom of the basin bowl and was too deep for a reliable repair — the basin needed replacing.
The Diagnosis
We inspected the basin and confirmed the crack went through the ceramic. While epoxy repairs can work temporarily, cracks in basins that are under constant water stress tend to reopen. Replacement was the correct, reliable solution.
The existing basin was a standard size, and the homeowner chose a replacement of the same dimensions to fit the existing vanity cutout. The waste and tap were being re-used, but the waste fitting would be replaced with new seals.
The Repair
We isolated the hot and cold water supplies via the isolation valves under the vanity, disconnected the tap flexi-tails and the basin waste, and carefully removed the cracked basin from the vanity worktop. The worktop cutout was inspected and cleaned.
A new ceramic basin of the same size was fitted into the existing cutout with silicone seal. The tap was refitted with new flexi-tails, and a new basin waste with a click-clack plug was fitted with fresh seals. The waste was connected to the existing trap, and both hot and cold supplies were reconnected.
Removed cracked basin from vanity worktop
Fitted new basin with silicone and new waste
Reconnected tap and tested for leaks
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The cracked basin was replaced and the bathroom sink was fully functional again — no more weeping water into the vanity unit. The new basin looked identical to the old one, and the homeowner was pleased that the vanity unit was protected from water damage.
We recommended checking the basin waste seal periodically for any signs of weeping, and advised avoiding dropping heavy objects into the basin to prevent future cracking.
