The Problem
A homeowner in Addlestone reported that water was leaking from under their shower screen onto the bathroom floor. After every shower, a puddle would form at the base of the screen. The shower screen was a frameless glass panel with a bottom seal that had perished.
The shower screen was approximately 6 years old. The bottom seal — a transparent plastic strip that bridges the gap between the glass and the shower tray — had become brittle, cracked, and was no longer preventing water from escaping underneath.
The Diagnosis
We inspected the shower screen and confirmed the bottom seal had failed. The seal had split in multiple places and was also lifting away from the glass in sections. Water was tracking under the screen and onto the floor.
The shower screen glass was in excellent condition and the hinges were solid. Only the bottom seal needed replacing. We measured the glass thickness — 8mm — and confirmed we had a compatible replacement seal in the van.
The Repair
We removed the old perished seal from the bottom of the glass panel. The glass edge was cleaned of any limescale and old silicone residue. A new 8mm shower screen bottom seal was cut to length and slid onto the glass panel.
The seal was positioned correctly and the junction between the seal and the shower tray was checked for any gaps. A small bead of sanitary silicone was applied at the ends of the seal where it met the wall to prevent any water tracking sideways. The shower was tested and no water leaked under the screen.
Removed perished bottom seal and cleaned glass
Fitted new 8mm seal cut to length
Sealed ends and tested for leaks
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The shower screen leak was fully resolved — no more water on the bathroom floor after showering. The new seal was tight against the glass and the shower tray, providing a reliable water barrier. The homeowner was pleased with the quick, clean repair.
We recommended keeping the seal clean and free of soap scum to extend its lifespan, and advised checking it annually for any signs of perishing or lifting.
