The Problem
A homeowner in Addlestone reported that their downstairs toilet was completely blocked — flushing caused the water level to rise almost to the rim and then drain away very slowly over several minutes. They had a plunger but it was not clearing the blockage.
The toilet was a close-coupled suite connected to a standard soil pipe. The blockage was somewhere in the waste run between the toilet and the main drain.
The Diagnosis
We removed the toilet pan connector to access the soil pipe and used a heavy-duty drain auger to investigate. The blockage was approximately 3 metres along the soil pipe — a compacted mass of toilet paper and a child's toy that had been flushed.
The soil pipe was a standard 110mm PVC pipe. The blockage had built up around the toy, which had become lodged at a slight bend in the pipe where two sections joined.
The Repair
We used the drain auger to break up and clear the compacted blockage, retrieving the toy that had caused the obstruction. The soil pipe was then flushed with a high-pressure hose to clear any remaining debris.
The toilet was refitted with a new pan connector and the flush was tested multiple times to confirm free-flowing drainage. We also inspected the external drain to confirm the pipe was clear all the way to the main sewer.

Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The toilet was flushing freely again and the blockage was completely cleared. The homeowner was relieved — and amused — that the cause was their child's toy. The toilet was back to full working order.
We recommended fitting a child-proof toilet lock to prevent toys being flushed in future, and advised against flushing anything other than toilet paper down the toilet.
